Getting a domain for your panel
You do not need one to start. When you want your own address, this is the whole of it.
Your panel already has an address that works today and will keep working forever. A domain of your own is only about how it looks to your customers: shop.example.com instead of shop.jeskierental.com. Nothing breaks while you set one up, and nothing breaks if you change your mind.
-
Pick a name
Short, easy to say down a phone, and easy to spell after somebody has heard it once. If you already have a business name, use that.
-
Buy it
Namecheap, Porkbun and Cloudflare all sell domains and all of them work. Buy it in your own name, with your own email and your own card - a domain somebody else bought for you is a domain somebody else can take away.
-
Turn on two-factor
On the account you bought it with, before anything else. A domain is the one thing that cannot be recovered by support if somebody takes the account it lives in.
-
Add the two records
Your panel shows them under Settings, Your own domain. Copy them exactly, including the underscore in the second one. Every registrar has a DNS page; it may be called DNS, Advanced DNS, or Nameservers.
-
Wait, and do nothing
New records usually work within a few minutes and sometimes take a few hours. We check every hour on your behalf, so you can close the page and get on with your day. You will be told when it is live.
What it costs
Between about 10 and 15 US dollars a year for a .com. Cheaper endings exist and most of them are fine; avoid the free ones, which can be taken back without warning. We charge nothing for connecting it and there is no extra fee on your plan.
A shop.example.com or a bare example.com?
Either works. A name with something in front of it - shop.example.com, panel.example.com - is simpler and works at every registrar. A bare example.com needs a registrar that supports CNAME flattening, which Cloudflare does for free and many others do not. If you are not sure, use a name with something in front. You can move later.
Stuck on any of it? Write to [email protected] with the domain you bought and we will look at it with you.
